Our favourite Christmas adverts of all time
Christmas is famously a time for good food, family and giving and receiving presents. However, for many families across the country, Christmas is about watching the telly.
According to research, a typical household will watch an amazing 62 hours of television over the festive period including 6 films, 2 full box sets and 4 Christmas specials. Furthermore, between 20th December and 2nd January 2021, experts estimate the British public will be glued to the box for almost four and a half hours every day!
Between the iconic Christmas films, comes the only TV breaks we look forward to - The Christmas Adverts. Here are some of the team’s all-time favourite Christmas ads…
John Lewis
It wouldn’t be a blog about Christmas adverts without the mention of John Lewis. The popular department store has become notorious for its Christmas adverts over the past decade and the Gather team are unanimous on some of their favourite ads being those made by John Lewis.
Content Creators Maddie, Sophie and Amy’s favourite John Lewis ad had to be ‘The Bear and the Hare’. If you haven’t seen it, The Bear and the Hare was John Lewis’ Xmas advert from 2013. Lily Allen covered Keane’s track, Somewhere Only We Know for the ad and is still a classic nearly 9 years later!

Digital Marketing Manager, Juliet’s all-time favourite Christmas advert was also from John Lewis. Their 2012 advert, including a Snowman and his secret journey to find love, is definitely a tear-jerker. The soundtrack is by Gabrielle Aplin, singing The Power Of Love, a 1984 hit from Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Jules always loves John Lewis’ Christmas adverts as she suggests ‘it’s the reason I wanted to get into marketing’.

Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s Christmas advert from 2014, made in partnership with The Royal British Legion was inspired by real-life events from 100 years ago. It shared the important message that “Christmas is for sharing” and commemorated the extraordinary events of Christmas Day, 1914. A time during the first world war when the guns fell silent and two armies met in no-man’s land to share gifts and even play football together.
This advert was a firm favourite for Content Creator, Mary and our Creative Content Lead, Danielle. 7 years later, this advert is still touching the hearts of the British public and is one that most will never forget.

Coca-Cola
Finally, our founder and MD, Sam, favourite Christmas advert has got to be the iconic ‘Holidays are Coming’ Coca-Cola advert.
1995, was the first time the iconic festive truck took centre stage of Coca Cola’s Christmas ad campaigns. Every year since then, the arrival of the Christmas truck seems to be the yearly reminder that Christmas is coming. The annual adverts also introduced viewers to the now-famous ‘Holidays Are Coming’ soundtrack which is a regular feature in the ads.
