What’s new in Social Media? - April 2024

19 April 2024

Hey there, social media enthusiasts! Can we just ask - how is it April already? It's that time of year when we have the typical April weather - hot, cold, repeat...the month of seasonal mood swings! As we let the weather make up its mind, let's jump into the latest and greatest social media updates that are shaking up the digital world.

Instagram's Carousel Comment Feature

First up on our radar is the buzz surrounding Instagram's latest experiment. Drumroll, please! A brand-new feature is currently under testing, which allows users to leave comments on specific posts within carousels. This exciting development opens up a whole new world of engagement possibilities, allowing users to dive deeper into the content and share their thoughts and feelings on individual pictures within those carousels. Users can use this feature by commenting the '@' symbol with the number of photos or videos in the carousel and then typing out their comments, just like tagging a friend in a post! The comment will then feature the carousel icon with the number you have commented against. It’s a great way for brands to engage with their audience on a more meaningful level, and allow their audience to share their specific feelings for each post. I know we aren’t the only people who are excited by this!

The Return of Snapchat?

Remember Snapchat? Well if you don't, you must have been living under a rock. Let's talk about the Snapchat resurgence that's got the social media world excited. Is Snapchat making a comeback? It certainly seems that way. With its innovative lenses and AI-powered features, Snapchat is attracting a growing number of creators who are looking to spice up their content game. They are continuing their expansion into the world of AI, from developing funky (or somewhat creepy!) filters to entire AR experiences. Their latest campaign with Cartier saw users being able to try on their classic Trinity ring with integrated ring try-on technology, which uses machine learning to predict the 3D hand surface. So, if you're a brand wanting to add some spice to your marketing campaigns this summer, Snapchat could be the way to go!

LinkedIn Games

Who said LinkedIn was all work and no play? Not anymore! LinkedIn is levelling up with the introduction of interactive games. Picture this: you're networking and searching for a new role, but instead of boring small talk, you're bonding over a game of snakes and ladders. Sounds fun, right? These old-school games look to add a playful twist to a professional networking site, making it easier than ever to connect with like-minded individuals in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. Games are one of the most popular app categories for both mobile and PC - with non-gaming platforms continuously trying to tap into this as a way to boost their own traffic. In 2022, The New York Times bought the internet viral 'Wordle' game, which still sees millions of users play each day. So, why not join in on the fun and upgrade your networking game on LinkedIn today?

YouTube's In-App Shopping Features

Last but certainly not least, YouTube is stepping up its game with the introduction of more in-app shopping features (watch out TikTok shop!) That's right – more and more social media sites are introducing these types of features, allowing people to shop 'till they drop without ever leaving the app! Whether you're watching a makeup tutorial or checking out the latest tech reviews, you'll have the option to purchase featured products directly from the video. It's convenience at your fingertips, making it easier than ever to discover and buy the products you love whilst you enjoy your favourite content on YouTube. One of the features they have teased is the release of Shopping Collections, allowing creators to curate products from their favourite brands, or even their own! These collections will appear within a creator's product list, Store tab, and video description and are currently only available on their mobile Studio app, with a release coming to Desktop soon!

As we sail through April, one thing is clear – the world of social media is constantly growing, and it's up to us to stay ahead of the curve. Whether you're engaging with carousel posts on Instagram, exploring the creative possibilities of Snapchat, bonding over games on LinkedIn, or indulging in some in-app shopping on YouTube, there's never been a better time to embrace the exciting opportunities that social media has to offer.
